I try to listen with great empathy and patience. However, I have at least one really bad listening habit.

When I’m not satisfied with your explanation I too often look through you in a way that reads, “That’s just dumb. You’re an idiot.” Naturally, I’ve never seen this look. Well, not on my own face at least. But I know when it’s there, and sometimes I’m told.

Maybe if I’m honest with myself I do think, “That’s just dumb.” I’m not thinking, “You’re an idiot.” Inside my head I’m searching for the satisfying answer on your behalf. And in this way I feel I’m being charitable and far less judgmental than it outwardly appears. With luck I can find a few questions, and together we’ll work toward a satisfying conclusion.

Of course, I’m indebted to you if my external behavior, intentional or not, leads you to think less of yourself. Debt no internal charity can repay.

My mind races at night when I try to sleep. Sometimes I grab my phone and jot things down in a text draft. Here’s what I noted, followed by some explanation.

honeynut cheerios – My favorite packaged breakfast cereal. The box I bought recently may be the first in more than eight years.

One late September night in 2000 I had a bowl of HNCs before leaving to meet friends at a bar. When I returned I found my dog dead on the floor with his head still in the plastic bag from the box. He managed to climb up to the table despite arthritis in his hips. And he’d managed to eat every last cheerio before his dying breath.

see, I told you so – Probably the wickedest thing I can, and do, say.

nature is unconditional. free will is the ability to bear a grudge. god was alone with this. – Imagine God creating the universe with all it’s physical harmony. Light and darkness. Action and reaction. Mass. Velocity. Among the animals he’s provided pain, fear, learning, and affection. Despite all of this, can it get any lonelier than no other existing entity possesing free will?
